iPhone therefore I Bitch

iphone.jpg
It's sleek, it's got 3G HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), 8G of storage and it's only $200. Attendees at Moscone West's Worldwide Developer's Conference are salivating over the new $200 iPhone. However, Information Week just released an article on the top ten reasons NOT to purchase this beautiful little gadget gem. Citing issues such as 2-year mandatory contracts, lack of a keyboard and a sub-par camera and radio, Eric Zeman argues that the iPhone is simply not worth it's low price tag.

APPLE vs. THIRD PARTIES
Zeman states, "Perhaps Apple is relying on third-party app developers to create better camera software. Personally, I'd rather have Apple-developed camera software, and Apple didn't deliver"

To me, I could care less whether Apple develops the iPhone apps or whether a third party does. In many cases, a third party developer would require very few levels of approval, could design without Apple's strict guidelines and would be free to produce several iterations of the same tool as per user preferences. It seems the phone is damned if they lock out the third party developers and damned if they don't.

I like the idea that someone else is going to make money other than Steve Jobs. Here are a couple of apps that address Zeman's concerns.

VIDEO: UShow and Drunknbass have teamed up to bring iPhone users an app that allows them to transform their iPhone camera into a video camera.

KEYBOARD: If you're actually the type of person who is going to complain about the keyboard knowing full well what you are purchasing before you bought it, you can look up a tip site like this one.

VOIP & IM: Fring is a mobile voice over IP and instant messaging app. It is free to install (upon cracking the iPhone) and allows users to speak to friends via Skype, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo and AIM.
