Yuri's Night: Mods and Ends

Logo-YurisNight.jpg

Last week a few friends were commissioned to build a lunar lander art exhibit at NASA's Ames Research Center for Yuri's Night. Essentially Yuri's Night (April 12) is a party to celebrate Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Cosmonaut, as the first human launched into space.

I'm bummed to have missed the event and I keep finding sites that remind me of my loss.

WISH FULFILLMENT
After hearing about the nightmarish ordeal of building the lunar landers via laser cutter, I discovered Ponoko. Ponoko is a UK-based site that allows users to upload designs and price them. Ponoko then produces and distributes the object once an order is made. Essentially, they are the CafePress of non-apparel manufacturing. Ponoko makes money by charging the designer for materials; however, because the designer takes these materials into consideration when pricing the item, everyone is guaranteed to turn a profit. Companies like CafePress and Ponoko are a great option for green designers because they cut out the problems of fulfillment, distribution and storage for surplus stock.

THE BLINKY STICK
This video exhibits how any old fool can induce seizures with a blinky rave projector. It's the perfect accessory for Yuri's Night, Burning Man or in my case, to annoy and blind my arch-nemesis, DJ Mark Farina.
