YouTube Beautifies Canadian Ballad-Belters

Yesterday I was forwarded an Alanis Morissette YouTube clip. For a few brief moments I had the flashback to 1991 where scared loved interest Matt le Blanc is swarmed by a sea of shopping mall debutantes. The single “Walk Away” was a complete flop and it took material girl Madonna’s style intervention and some serious CanCon maneuvering to help skyrocket Jagged Little Pill to the top of the charts. Nothing about Morissette’s rise to fame is ironic—she simply doesn’t know the meaning of the word. But the grunge diva’s recent foray into YouTube hiphop is a welcome and refreshing effort at satire.

BNL
At first glance this unassuming group of Scarborough, Ontario natives could be mistaken for extras in a Tim Horton dough nut commercial, but the Bare Naked Ladies have had a presence at colleges and festivals for more than a decade. Recently, the group created a user-generated video with participation from YouTube celebrity Gary Brolsma of Numa Numa fame.

Given that I've never really had an interest in either Alanis or the Bare Naked Ladies until exploring their newly acquired distribution methods, I think it is safe to say that Marshal McLuhan was right, "the medium is the message".
