Veoh & Io: Going to the Mattress

boobtube.jpg

Last week, San Francisco-based Io Group - a department of hardcore queer adult entertainment company Titan Media, filed a complaint in U.S. District Court for California's Northern District alleging that Veoh, (San Diego-based user-generated video site) is responsible for copyright infringement. Io Group claims that Veoh users have illegally viewed copyrighted works over 40,000 times between June 1-22. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe only 20 of these views were by Mark Wahlberg researching a Boogie Nights sequel. (The rest are probably from Republican legislators)

IT GETS STICKY: ENTER VIACOM & NBC
It's not enough that Viacom and NBC are strong-arming video uploaders across the internet, they've got to busybody their way into other courtrooms as well. The media giants have filed an Amicus Brief in the Veoh and Io Group case in support of Io's position to protect it's copyrighted products. While neither Viacom and NBC are actually involved in this particular case, the brief has been submitted due to their vested interest in DMCA-related legal decisions. They've been suing up a storm with Youtube and other video-related sites for quite a while now. A copy of the Io / Veoh case Amicus brief is available at Scribd.

WHO'S ON TOP?

According to Digital Trends News, Veoh filed a preemptive suit against Universal Music Group (UMG) in anticipation of a copyright infringement case. The preemptive strike suggests that Veoh is entitled to protection under the "safe harbor" provision of U.S. copyright law because they have taken preventative actions to ensure that users are dissuaded from uploading illegal works. They have even made every effort to remove questionable works upon request - including, much to the chagrin of the extremely active porn boards - most adult content.
