The New Hotness: Chrome, Celebrity & Seed

I will not write about Chrome, it's a dead horse of a story. CNET just published an article entitled Reviewing the Reviews of Google's Chrome. There's nothing I can add. My writing career is over. Wait. I just remembered how I'm far too narcissistic to retire with only 3 blog readers. The day I stop writing is the day my husband shoots my molten remains out of a potato gun at a passing yuppie sail boat. Eat that Hunter S. Thompson.

THE NEW HOTNESS
Chrome is this week's new hotness, but when TechCrunch 50 starts up and all the beautiful people roll into town, nobody will give a rats ass about Chrome. Tabs are nice, but they are not Ashton Kutcher launching a company and punking Michael Arrington. While I am not a TV person, I still hero worship. I'm just more likely to subscribe to an RSS feed than wear a shirt with someone's big ugly mug on it. I might make an exception for Ashton Kutcher.

REAL HERO WORSHIP: SEED FUNDING & GROWING IDEAS
I have always been a fan of Y Combinator. How can you not love a business incubator started by lovable rogues who collectively created the Morris worm and the first asp? Featured today in Mashable, Y Combinator has been questioned for its 6% share requirement. That being said, because so few (non-platform building) companies need a bazillion dollars to launch, a 6% share is a phenomenal deal if you get acquired and don't need anymore money. And trust me, there are companies that don't need more money.

Look at Startup Weekend. Take a room full of about 100 people and create and launch a company in 54 hours. Every contributor gets an equal cut of the project's profits. What the heck did you do last weekend that was so productive? I discovered a new cheese.

There's also TechStars. Based out of Boulder Co, TechStars offers $15,000 to 10 startups for a 3 month crash course, legal advice and industry connections. I have no idea what the share percentage is, but mentors include folks from Feedburner, Photobucket, Wallstrip, Bitmore Ventures, Blue Mountain and WordPress. My favorite TechStar is mobile dynamo Brightkite.

As an added bonus, prior to presentation to more than 150 VCs, TechStars students took a break and filmed this video, proving 2 things:
1. Real Estate in Boulder is gorgeous and easier to come by; and,
2. It's important to enjoy the work you do- whether for a startup, Google, or an investment firm - 'cause this could all go wrong.

Have a great day!
