St. Stupid's Day

Bob.jpg

San Francisco’s Transamerica pyramid will host the Church of the Last Laugh’s annual St. Stupid’s Day Parade this Sunday. If the event is anything like last year’s parade, hoards of young disenfranchised/slightly-sauced youth will don costumes in celebration of irreverence, irony and the reclamation of Sunday as a day of recovery over worship. Kindred quasi-religion the Church of Subgenius will also be presenting what they are billing as a “Devivalistic Sacred Book Signing/Burning Party” at beat epicenter City Lights.

While the Church of the Last Laugh promises “one holy day a year and a two dimensional spiritual scapegoat,” the Church of Subgenius is best known for its love of slackmaster Bob and efforts to separate the “abnormals” (that’s us) from the “Earth pinks”.

Oh Bob, any religion offering the near-immediate rewards of “fornicationalism”, “pancultural deprogramming” and a UFO ride is okay in my books. You had me at "excremeditation".

Given that both American Splendor’s R. Crumb and the late great Robert Anton Wilson are Sub Genii ordained ministers and given that thousands of college students in Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto tune in to Reverend Ivan Stang’s Hour of Slack, the universe is generally unfolding as it should. However, there are exceptions.

RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION MEME
NYC comedian Rachel Bevilacqua, who performs under the name “Rev. Magdalen,” lost custody of her 10-year-old son this past Christmas because of her involvement with the SubGenius Foundation. Magdalen supporters can help via the SubGenius site.

ABNORMALS ARISE!
If you actually know what the word “meme” means and you aren’t just a tired spamster or clueless FBI agent looking for traces of dissention, you may want to contribute to the High Weirdness bookmark project – a catalogue of slack.
