Separation Between Church & State

Church%26State.jpg
In 1986, the year Expo Ernie became a B.C.- based meme of his own, the BC Civil Liberties Association challenged the mandatory Lord's Prayer in public schools on the grounds that it infringed upon the right to freedom of religion - a major tenet of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. (That's the Canadian constitution for you Yanks) The BCLA won.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that "one religion must not be given a position of dominance, and opening or closing exercises at school must reflect the multicultural realities and traditions of Ontario society."

OH NO HE DI'N'T
Prime Minister Harper delivered his Canada Day greeting with an interesting line:
"From the natural wealth of the land that God created, to the talents, energy and imagination of people drawn from all the nations of the earth, we are a country that has been truly blessed."

God created Canada - not Allah, not Buddha, not Vishnu, not Zeus, not Amon Ra, not the Flying Spaghetti Monster, not the Elvish River people and certainly not the Sky Goddess of Turtle Island. Also, we're talking about a New Testament God, not to be confused with a Judeo-Christian God because Canada's God isn't going to keep kosher if it has to choose between inclusion and a crispy plate of bacon.

A PLEA
Oh Canada...please don't let go of who you are. I know you think I'm a stinky hippie, but I beg of you...smile on the street and honour diversity - even if it's loud and smells weird. By the way, I'm pretty sure that Expo Ernie was a transhumanist.
