Real Life Phonies: Monetizing Mobile

The Under the Radar Conference is calling for applications from early stage mobile start up companies and the race is on for companies to monetize. Whether ad revenue or subscription-based, if you thought mobile apps were tricked out before, just wait until you see them now.

VIDEO:
In the past I've spoken about UShow and tweeted notes on Qik; however, according to Robert Scoble the new vid kid on the block is Kyte.com. Similiar to Qik and UShow, Kyte allows users to create channels and stream in real time for free. Essentially, sponsors and advertisers will fight for a chance to be featured next to the various channels. The difference between other services and Kyte is that the SF-front runner has about 20 times more funding that the others and the participation of 50 Cent and Prodigy. With hip hop celebrity-endorsed sites like WuChess and DanceJam getting attention, Kyte should have no problem reeling in audiences. The hat camera is sooo 2006 or rather, so 1980. The phone cam is stealth and it doesn't give you helmet hair.

DATA PORTABILITY & THE SOCIAL GRAPH
So now that you're using Twitter, Facebook, Orkut, Skype, GTalk and your old IM clients, you need to consolidate. It's a hassle to create a new user name and password for each of these services, and yet, using the same password in addition to your banking, equifax and employment records is like inviting thieves to pick your pockets. Many companies have agreed to Open ID standards in the hopes that users will sign-in and browse across networks. Equals, the company that recently launched Buzz-me! (a Facebook app that manages IM, text messages, mobile, VoIP, e-mail, and land line accounts) is no exception. Robert Scoble recently uploaded the below video on Equals' upcoming universal inbox product due to launch this summer. With Equals' Facebook group conference application, "Party Line", the company brings in revenue via short audio ads. Eager audiences will have to wait and see what the company has planned for their newest product.
