Powerset: Microsoft to Bid $100 million

According to CNET's Dan Farber, Powerset, the semantic web search tool, may be exploring options to sell to either Microsoft or Google. TechCrunch estimates that the Microsoft offer is currently at $100 million dollars.

BETTING ON THE HORSE IN THE GATE
I just got my Powerset beta search a few weeks ago and I still can't quite figure out how to test the difference between a Google search and a Powerset search. I understand that Powerset should be able to produce more relevant results; however, I just can't seem to stump Google with my vast knowledge of useless parables, colloquialisms and slang. Trust me, I'm not typing the Queen's English. (Well, maybe Freddy Mercury's.) But Google is a pretty damn decent search experience.

I love the idea of Powerset. I love the people behind it and the idea of natural language search; nevertheless, I feel ill-equipped to sing the praises of the semantic web with only a small window into Wikipedia.

***UPDATE
In the time I took to post this article, Powerset has moved from private beta to open WIkipedia search.

**July 1, 2008 - UPDATE: Acquisition
According to TechCrunch Microsoft is about to announce acquisition of Powerset this afternoon.
