Parakey & Facebook

parakey.jpg
Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt, co-founders of Parakey, are taking their careers to new heights. Their open-source operating system and applications were recently purchased by social networking giant Facebook for an undisclosed sum. While bloggers speculate that Facebook may be trying to compete with Google, the company's press release simply states that:

Ross and Hewitt will join Facebook's team to work on the development of Facebook Platform and the company's website.

Best known as the co-founders of Firefox - a cross-platform browser that captures about 15% of the worldwide market - Ross and Hewitt are likely to lend legitimacy to a Facebook development community and open new avenues to an application that recently began welcoming third party applications.

With Inside Facebook chronicling the latest applications, it shouldn't be long before we start seeing this platform mature from a glorified MySpace to something that consumes developers, teens and even elderly users such as myself.
