OLPC Music Program: Sampling Library Gets Huge Boost

olpc.jpg Whoa. The OLPC folks just hit the musical jackpot. While we were sleeping, the group attempted to transfer 5TB of sound samples to their website and what with a huge traffic spike, the dang thing done broke. It seems the children of the world will have to wait until tomorrow to work on their electronic music.

LAPTOPS AND THE PORTABLE CLASSROOM
As I've said before, I love the OLPC; nevertheless, I continue to hear the same argument over and over again. Why should we give kids laptops when they need health care?

Let's put it this way. I've lived in a Third World country and worked with at-risk youth, active intravenous drug addicts and sex trade workers and I still think the OLPC is a good idea. I think the folks that look at health care as something separate from access to information are simply not using their computers properly. The majority of chronic illnesses prevalent in the world today are preventable and yet no one is putting money into prevention. In a world where cause-marketing and re-election campaigns are based on visual indicators, it's a hell of alot easier to cite the number of individuals treated then it is to figure out the number of individuals saved from illness.

OLPC is beyond short term ad campaigns and 4 year political careers. It's a portable teacher complete with a music curriculum and unlike real teachers, it's accessible 24 hours a day.
