Now This Is Just Loonie

Looney.jpg

It's pretty old news by now that there have been reports in the Canadian media about Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags being placed in Canuck one-dollar coins to spy on defence contractors.

What's interesting is that the Globe and Mail is reporting today that this story is a little bit overblown. I didn't really twig into this fact right away either, but:

“What is the value of a device for tracking someone when it changes hands so frequently and so readily?,” said Alex Reeves, a spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mint, in an interview.

Also, it is a crime to tamper with Canadian money. However, knowing what I now know about the Canadian government -- having worked for them a bit -- I wouldn't put it past them to break their own laws, let's just say.

I'll be watching my money very closely from now on. Yep.

Incidentally, the above story link was written by one Mr. Colin Freeze. I went to journalism school at Carleton U with him, and recall working with him about 10 years ago. He struck me as a very nice, driven, young chap. I am sincerely happy for his success, and it is nice to see his name in print from time to time.
