Ning Raises Series D

gross.jpg

Last Friday VentureBeat uncovered Ning's $60 million dollar Series D funding.

DIY social network giant, Ning, currently has a $500 million dollar valuation proving that Marc Andreessen- co-founder of Ning and Netscape, chair of HP-acquired Opsware, board member on the Open Media Network and investor in both Digg and Twitter - is pretty much the man.

According to Andreessen's blog, there are over 230,000 networks on Ning with a growth rate of 1000 new networks per day. The new funding will ensure scalability for these ever-increasing communities. I'm sure my Transhumanist friends will be pleased to see their home colony expand.

COMMON SENSE USER-EXPERIENCE
Andreessen is perhaps best know for creating the Mosaic web browser - the first browser to use open web standards and allow for images embedded into pages.

Imagine pre-1993 and having to click through to a separate image file. While an image source link is commonplace now, Andreesen vastly improved web usability. Without him, every image file would be a potential goatse.
