Memetic Highbrow: Live-Action Youtubery

youtubed02.jpg

Last night I joined my sweetums for a little hot thespian action, and in true San Francisco geek-style we paid $10 to watch a play about YouTube memes (That's $10 Canadian as well. D'oh.) Climate Theater's YouTubed features an array of funky SOMA players re-enacting YouTube’s most popular memes including Vancouver Aquarium’s hand holding otters, sneezing panda baby and my personal favorite (both in Youtube and Youtubed format), dramatic hamster.

While you may think these cuddly mammal vignettes are simply adorable distractions, these babies are looking at an audience of 13 million viewers. This goes to show that both cute and sex sells. And this is a marketer's wet dream.

When you factor in Chris Crocker’s whopping 11 million views on his Leave Britney alone monologue and the residual views on NumaNuma, you’ve got yourself a play that will likely have audience members mouthing the words. Especially in a city like San Francisco, where the geek ratio is higher than ever.

SOMETHING I’VE NEVER SEEN

OMFG…MBNA and Bank of America’s recent foray into shitty karaoke ballads is an amazing display of how delusional upper management can become when they find themselves lost down the corporate rabbit hole with nothing but branding gimmicks to save them. Which one of you smart ass shop stewards put this train wreck comment into the wooden suggestion box? Jesus. Your managers really love you and you’re making them look like pathetic losers. Are you happy with yourselves? You’ve just killed casual Fridays for everyone.

YOU: Well, if you haven't seen it Dana then it must not be that famous.
ME: Alas, dear reader. This one slipped through my fingers, but it still boasts half a million page views and Johnny Marr, original emo-guitarist of the Smiths and now of Modest Mouse, has already performed it in it's entirety at New York's legendary Bowery Ballroom. My apologies. It appears my finger is only close to the pulse and not actually on it.
