"Mad World" Jumps The Shark

You can hardly blame agency of record McCann Erickson for hopping on the Gary Jules bandwagon. Gary's chilling rendition of "Mad World" is seemingly a perfect compliment to the imagery in the new television/cinema spot for the Gears of War game title. However, the song that was originally written by Tears for Fears and now famously covered by Gary Jules (vocals) and Michael Andrews (piano), has officially jumped the shark. Since first popping up in the soundtrack for the feature film Donnie Darko, Gary's "Mad World" has now been featured in television series CSI, ER, Without a Trace and now comes this latest iteration for Microsoft. I think it's safe to say at this point that this song will be far more known for its commercialization than for its moderate run on the European music charts in 2003-2004. Having said all of this, if you haven't seen the new Xbox tv spot, it's worth a look. The entire spot was shot from actual game footage, a trend we are likely to see grow as gameplay and graphics on every console continues to rival true realism and Hollywood polish.
