Happy Belated Canada Day: Cdn Twitter Clone Making Headlines

canada.jpg

Lord thundering Jesus dontcha know eh? Someone from my home and native land has created a Twitter clone and it's open source! I just signed up for Indenti.ca, the Twitter clone that launched this morning to the acclaim of the folks from Creative Commons.

Built by Evan Prodromou, self-proclaimed "Montreal hacker" and creator of WikiTravel, Identi.ca offers some familiar Twitter features in addition to the requirement to agree to CC licensing all content (apart from contact info) under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

The site launched with the intention of filling the need for a site adhering to open micro-blogging protocol - one that allowed users to port their social graph from one service to another. Moreover, because indenti.ca itself is licensed as Free Software and all of the site's data is under CC Attribution 3.0, developers can modify and remix the site to launch their own network (as long as it also acknowledges indenti.ca's code contribution).

While several key features are still on their way, including SMS updates, maps, cross-post and pull from other micro-blog services, Facebook integration and tinyurl, the site is still an interesting experiment with its integration of Open ID standards. Several new users are microblogging the lack of features within the community; however, the fact of the matter is, even after being featured on ReadWriteWeb, Creative Commons and Hacker News, it's still standing like a champ. It's open source baby. These guys probably built this thing with a dream in their hearts and very little money in their pockets. It's a wonder that indenti.ca got the product out the door in the time that it did. But like any well-planned community, only time will tell if their scalability and infrastructure will stand up to the masses. In any case, as a proud Canadian and lover of the CC, I'm rooting for them.
