Gnomedex: PR & The Blogosphere

gnomedex.jpg This week I'm going to Gnomedex, actually, right this second I'm going to Gnomedex on a cramped United airline flight and Guy Kawasaki, famed Apple marketer and Truemors creator, is about 40 rows ahead of me.You could say that both in internet terms, and in real life, I am a lurker.

Gnomedex is a conference where bloggers, podcasters and influential internet types convene in Seattle to kvetch, drink, and trade business cards in an effort to influence memes, technology and social media best practices. Some of this year's speakers include Beth Kanter (a really talented non-profit social media specialist), writer Sarah Lacy, and Canadian author and marketer Tara Hunt of Citizen Agency and Horsepigcow. I'm going to Gnomedex to meet folks and talk about my new gig at FixYa. In the time leading up to the event, I put together a pretty kick ass media center if I do say so myself.

SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE
My good friend Rebecca Reeve works for Brian Solis. Outside of the tech industry few people know Brian. Nevertheless, within the industry he's known as one of the 2 PR guru's behind the social media press release. I built my media center with the release in mind.

Prior to seeing the official social media release in 2006, I thought "social media release" described the common phenomenon of bitching about your job on Facebook. As more professional tech bloggers emerge, the public sees more juicy information plucked from corporate and personal blog feeds, Twitter, Delicious bookmarks, candid Flickr photos, Youtube tomfoolery and the internet archive / wayback machine. Solis' social media release is a proactive approach to blogger relations. I look forward to finally meeting him in person.

On another note...
RIAA CLOSES DOWN MUXTAPE
You remember muxtape...it was the cute little colorful site with absolutely no search ability, and a good community of early adopters uploading their 12 favorite songs for your streaming pleasure. You know, like a mix tape? The highly volatile format you received from an awkward loser boy containing such hits as Sayonara, End of the Road and Motown Philly?

Well the Recording Industry Association of America sent a DMCA notice to muxtape and they've shut down temporarily (or perhaps forever). In any case, my awesome mix entitled, "sayonara" is no longer available for people to ridicule. I'm going to have to start letting my mustache grow out again.
