Gnarls Barkley Jumps The Shark

gnarls_barkley.jpgIf you haven't heard Gnarls Barkley's song "Crazy" then you need to check your pulse. Seriously. Ok, that's being a bit over-dramatic but it does seem that this song has officially jumped the shark. It's being played and downloaded everywhere ranking #2 in Canada & U.S. iTunes Music Stores. Speaking of downloads, Barkley's "Crazy" was the first song in British history to rise to the top of the charts based solely on sales from internet downloads. The popular duo of Danger Mouse (no stranger to viral hits) and rap singer Cee-Lo sampled a baseline from a song (Nel Cimitero di Tuscon) in an Italian spaghetti western film called Preparati la bara!, and the rest is music history. Have a listen to the original and Barkley'd baselines:

Nel Cimitero di Tuscon - Gianfranco Reverberi (1968)
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley (2006)

Gnarls Barkley (DJ Danger Mouse and singer Cee-Lo Green) haven't just made a great debut album. On "St. Elsewhere," they've perfected a new pop for a not-quite new century.
