According to my weekly regime of Myers Briggs testing, I am an ENFP - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving individual this week. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure that my amazing "people skills" will fail me within the day.
Exhibit A: I have already been a bit hasty with my Monday post by discrediting the Wired Sexiest Geeks list. Dr. Kiki Sanford does in fact deserve to be there; however, so does witty sex blogger Violet Blue, Free Culture author and super lawyer Lawrence Lessig and You Can Draw: Star Wars author and Grrl originator,Bonnie Burton. My criteria for Sexy Geeks is that they are both intelligent and would otherwise be doing their work pro bono.
Exhibit B: I have RSVPed for a Chinese dinner tonight with Eric S. Raymond and the Bay Area Linux User Group. I don't know anything about Linux and very little about Eric S. Raymond.
WHAT I KNOW
Eric S. Raymond solidified his place as a geek god after presenting his essay, "The Cathedral and the Bazaar"- a piece that raised up the "bazaar" model of Linux (and the open evolution of the Lisp code pool) which convinced Netscape to publish source code as free software. In effect, this was the inciting incident in the Open Source initiative and the Mozilla project. Yes that's right open sourcers, ESR is your daddy.
He also wrote a well-referenced comparative operating system history "The Art of Unix Programming" and contributed huge chunks of info to The Linux Documentation Project. If that isn't enough, he is the editor of The New Hacker's Dictionary or hacker slang site, The Jargon File.
In essence, Raymond is an extremely intelligent, weird and slightly serious dude who will likely be surrounded by others who dislike Linux ignoramuses such as myself. Still, the spirit of Linus' Law (given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow) can be applied to larger global issues requiring collective solutions...oh fuck, I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm gonna drink whiskey.
