CD's are Dead says EMI

At the London Business School, the CEO & chairman of EMI Music, Alain Levy told an audience that the CD as we know it is dead.

Levy said that record companies will have to include "value added material" to be able to continue to make CDs attactive to consumers.

“We have to be much more innovative in the way we sell physical content,” he said.

Is this true or all hype? Sales figures provided by the IFPI don’t quite support what Alain Levy is saying. CD sales still account for more than 70% of total international music sales, while digital music sales sit at about 11%.

Levy also mentioned why EMI was not one of the people to sign a deal with YouTube recently.
“The terms they were offering weren’t acceptable.”
