Amazon to do Video Downloads

amazon_logo.gifEveryone is jumping on the video hosting/download bandwagon, and Amazon is ready to take their own stab at it with their own Amazon Digital Video subscription service. It will well you download TV episodes and movies. Both download to own and download as a rental should be included.

If there is any company that can make a DRM secured, desktop client driven, video download service work for a wide audience, Amazon would have to be pretty far up near the top of the list.

Techcrunch gives their two cents on the upcoming service:

I do wonder though, whether getting video online is a practice that will remain most common among the young and hip for some time. That demographic may be more interested in exploring use of non-traditional vendors than older customers might. They are also probably more willing to just grab videos from illicit P2P networks. All of these vendors, including Amazon, are going to have to come up with something awfully compelling (carrot or stick) to get the kind of business in this medium that they seek.

It should be interesting to see how they compete, as every major company that can, rushes towards providing the world with downloadable television and movies, since not making any discs probably saves studios massive amounts of money.
