AOL To Launch “Myspace Killer”

aollogo.gifAOL may be preparing to launch a Myspace-type social network called “Head On” sometime in the next few weeks, says Dave Winer.

While there are many social networks already out there, AOL just realized that they want in on the whole thing and are rumoured to be launching a new service that will be open to both AOL and non AOL members called "Head On".

The whole thing has been confirmed likely by Jason Calacanis and Jordan Running, who are key figures online, and have strong connections with AOL.

With over 65 million Myspace members, it is no wonder a group like AOL would want to get going on a service like Myspace, as they would have the funding to really compete in the market, and with the smallest highly recognizable site Tagworld having over 1.5 million members, that is still a fair bit of money coming in that AOL would like a piece of.

As TechCrunch says:

"Fickle teenagers and young adults are quick to jump ship to the hot new thing, but these existing players will certainly not lie down for AOL."

It should be interesting to see the features they provide, as well as the perceived "coolness" of the new service, as having the AOL name can either hurt or help a service.
